“We were that close?” Kiba was astonished that they were within minutes of Naruto yet no one detected him. “Would Naruto-kun r-really do that?” Hinata was desperately trying to convince herself that it wasn’t him. She didn’t want to grasp the fact they were so close and failed. She wasn’t the only one.

Even Tsunade didn’t want to face the facts but at least she found good points within the failure. It cleared the rumors that he was dead or captured. “How could he have gone unnoticed? Team 8 is the top tracking squad.” questioned Shizune.

“The battlefield.” Most in the room were shocked that Shino spoke up. “The blood could have easily covered up his scent and distract my parasites.”

“I see but this mission still won’t be overlooked. For now it’s a failure but if any new leads arise it will be reopened. You are dismissed.” They all bowed their heads and exited the office. The moment the door closed Tsunade reached for her bottle of sake.

“Lady Tsunade are you really that upset?”

“For now keep the result of the mission top secret.”

“What’s the matter with the result of the mission?”

Tsunade stared blankly into the cup of sake. “I’m worried about how Sakura will take the news.”

Shizune finally realized why the Hokage was so upset now. If Sakura were to find out she would leave immediately for the wave country and she wouldn’t think twice about it. Tsunade chuckled while Shizune gave her a confused look. “What is so funny Lady Tsunade?”

“At least Sakura isn’t a constant eavesdropper like Naruto.”

“That’s for sure.”

--------------------------------------------------------------

The pink haired kunoichi they happened to be talking about wasn’t eavesdropping on their conversation but was eavesdropping nonetheless. She was carefully listening to Hinata’s conversation with Team 10 at the Korean barbeque.

“So close but I must agree with you Hinata.” Ino was trying to help Hinata out but there were parts of the man’s story that couldn’t be true. There were things that not even Naruto were capable of. “Come on I mean moving in the blink of an eye. That man had to have been in shock.”

“You could be right Ino.” Shikamaru was finally putting some of his own two sense into the situation. “Still you could be wrong at the same time.”

“Shikamaru what are you getting at?”

“It may not seem like it but he’s been gone for two years and knowing how he trains anything is possible.” Ino took a minute to grasp his words. “Maybe you are right Shikamaru.”

‘He was in the Land of Waves.’ Sakura ran off after receiving the results of the mission. ‘Would he still be there or where would he go next?’ Possible scenarios were swirling around in her head as she sifted through her apartment, throwing certain things into an open pack. A knock on the door startled Sakura. First she thought to ignore the visitor but then they became persistent. The never ending knocking was driving her insane.

“What is it?!” exclaimed Sakura as she practically ripped the door from its hinges. The chunin standing in front of her was cowering in fear as she stared him down while awaiting his response. “T-the Hokage w-wishes to see you.” Sakura’s body tensed in what may have been rage and stormed past the fear filled shinobi.

“Sakura I will be having you work more hours at the hospital from now on. We seem to be getting a little short handed.” Sakura was standing before her trying to control her raging emotions.

“Of course” was her answer hissed through clenched teeth. When she finally left, Shizune was bombarded with special requests. “Shizune I want increased guards on the nightshift and make sure someone keeps an eye on Sakura. I’m afraid that she has caught wind of the mission’s failure and his current location.”

“Yes.”

---------------------------------------------------------------

Sakura paced for awhile outside of the hospital grounds. Some of the nurses were worrying about her but none dared to go near her. The only thing that they discovered over the years was how vicious she could be when she was bothered. They definitely knew that she picked that trait up from the Godaime.

‘Come on Sakura pull yourself together. What would Naruto say if he saw you like this?’ She inhaled deeply, finally making a firm resolution within herself. Then she did what none of the by standing nurses were expecting. Sakura turned and walked into the hospital and got right to work. Under normal circumstances a wall would have become rubble or the landscape would have changed. no, she decided to trust Naruto to come back to her. She still had some hope after these two years that he would return. Until then she would do whatever was necessary to help the village.

‘It’s what he would have done.’
